The Men and Women Relied on to Create a Future for Yemen

2022 arrives, while Yemenis' wishes for an end to the war are still pending, on hold.

Early in 2021, "Khuyut" conducted a survey involving male and female citizens of all ages whose first wish was for the war to end and the stability to return to their lives. In the last month of the same year, we have seen the signs of the storm and flood returning back to the ground zero, where they set off from years ago.

Thus overlap the times and wars of Yemen, while the contagion of wandering and miscalculation invades the minds of politicians, military brass, and war lords of all factions, as it invades the minds of intellectuals stuck in days gone by of both glories and setbacks. It does not seem that the actors in the war or those who are able to act, either by fueling or by extinguishing it, can think of a future beyond their own personal or factional interests. The mind of the politician invokes the grandeur or the inconsequence of his fathers and forefathers in order to cast for himself and his clan a similar glory or to avenge an out-dated setback, while the mind of the intellectual invokes the era of royal generosity to "court" scribes.

The situation which makes the Yemeni political mind and its intellectual counterpart unique, is characterized by either romantic perceptions of governance or arbitrary misconceptions of the meaning of ‘public interest,’ interest of the people and the state. The first says: the ‘people’, meaning himself and his supporters, and the second says: the ‘state’, and he means the collection of his privileges.

What is remarkable in this caricature reiteration of the production and belief of the lie is that the intellectual, who is known as "organic", has not completely disappeared from the scene. To the extent that he is credited with preserving authentic values in major crises and difficult times, his share is enormous of the responsibility either for subservience or for promoting perceptions that the relationship between the intellectual and the authority should be characterized by hostility; Such boundary relationship that requires all or nothing, and such indignant and emotional tone in the voice of the "free intellectual".

• In conjunction with the perpetuation of the war, the fuse of demonization is still burning without regard to the basics of dialogue and  exchange of information from the real database of Yemen, with its history and present, the interdependence of its causes and its public interest regionally and internationally.

As a result of this imbalance, and in its space, he wills of actors fight each other in the constructive as well as the destructive domains, where the religious overlaps with the mundane, the national with the personal and the categorical with the individual.

The disputes of the political parties bred this fierce war, and the differences of the intelligentsia generated the  catastrophic failure to advance and manifest the concept of national interest.

Between this and that, the war produced a type of intellectuals  and statesmen that was not apparent before weapons became the means of negotiation and dialogue. Those are the ones who can create a secure future for promising generations. Everyone who found himself disgusted and repulsed at taking up arms to kill rivals or opponents of his own kind, holding himself aloof from engaging in bloodshed and destruction of social fabric. This group are numerous; statesmen and women, soldiers, party figures, journalists, writers, academicians and professional experts in economics, medicine and technology. Among them are also sheikhs, tribesmen and religious scholars. Nevertheless, the fuse of demonization is still burning among them without regard to the basics of dialogue and the exchange of information from the real database of Yemen, with its history and present, the interdependence of its causes and public interest regionally and internationally.

All those who believe in peace and dialogue with a long and considerate forbearance, are expected today to seek, inspire and use a language of reason in the utmost degree of anger, of hope in the utmost degree of despair, and of confidence in the utmost degree of uncertainty. In times of peace, the present is a priority, but in times of war, the future is the goal; "Your future is what you do now"

•   2022 arrived, while the war in Yemen is still grinding in a vicious cycle. People wish it were over, but it keeps reverting back to the square one. It is  time to make brave compromises.

• After the opponents have demonstrated their destructive capabilities, why don't they try their constructive skills, and after they have sought help from abroad, why don't they give a chance to dialogue with one another with prudent forbearance. Will 2022 be the year of brave concessions?
