Social Violence Over Land Grabbing

From the corn harvest to the harvest of lives in Amran

On the morning of October 10, a farmer in the Aqar area of Amran governorate, AbdulKarim Ghaithan, went to his field, quiet, to harvest the seasonal corn crop after four months of his family's hard work in plowing, sowing, fertilizing, irrigation, and guarding. But no sooner had the morning completed his autumnal breathing around than an armed man (A.A.H.) came to him with evil filling his eyes, so that a verbal altercation broke out between them about the land and its ownership. Consequently, the altercation developed into a quarrel, and without warning, the armed man took his gun and pointed it at the man, shooting into his thin body several fatal bullets, killing him in his field, and throwing him covered in his own hot blood. Today, the angry killer is in prison, awaiting a legal punishment; if the case is not resolved within the framework of the usual tribal custom after his gun killed a man.

Apart from the reasons for the quarrel between the two men, which—whatever its motives—does not justify this case of gratuitous murder, what is important to present here is: How did murder become the first solution resorted to by the disputants? After the lack of other solutions for many reasons and after the spread of the killing machine carried on the shoulders of Yemenis and in their waist belts without deterrents or moral fortifications.

Upon examination of this tragic incident, this case of murder can be attributed to two main reasons among many, which are:

First: the spread of the phenomenon of chaos. It is no secret to anyone what Yemen is going through in terms of difficult situations and wars, the first victim of which is the human being killed by another belonging to one of the parties to the conflict. This has led to getting used to hearing news of killings on a daily basis. In addition to the effects that the war has left on people, which explode in the face of society all the time and will grow if the war stops without treatment,

Second: the absence of the judiciary and its ineffectiveness in adjudicating between societal issues, which, in the absence of awareness, leads to the growth of killing and fighting between disputants who have lost hope in resolving their cases that have been pending in the corridors of the judiciary for years, or because they lack confidence in its integrity if it issues its verdict, even after a long time.

With these two reasons, in addition to other overlapping reasons, the killing machine will continue to kill Yemenis, and the only way to stop it is by addressing the motives and circumstances that led to its emergence and spread. Therefore, here, I propose some scenarios to address this growing problem, which cannot be stopped in the future if the parties with direct responsibility continue to turn a blind eye to it, including:

Making concessions by the parties to the conflict to bring peace as quickly as possible to stop the killing machine from taking its toll on the lives of Yemenis, striving diligently to activate the role of the judiciary even before peace is achieved, each party under its control—if their goal is the security and safety of the Yemeni citizen as they claim—and most importantly, comprehensive community awareness and enacting the harshest deterrent penalties for those who deliberately and knowingly assault a human infallible soul.
