Al-Luhaya District (north of Hodeida Governorate) has been experiencing a real tragedy for days as a result of the torrential rains that swept away many homes in the villages of “Deir Madheea” and its environs, and caused the destruction of property, the razing of agricultural lands and the killing of dozens of livestock.

The torrents of Wadi Moor have also cut off the road that connects (the Zuhra - Al Luhya) and caused great material losses to the fishermen whose fish spoiled after the torrential waters cut off their ways out of the Luhya.

Since last July 2022, Yemen has been witnessing heavy rains, resulting in torrential rains and floods, causing severe damage to public and private properties in a number of cities and provinces in the country, especially in the agricultural sector, roads and various infrastructure and service sectors.

Moreover, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) expects that heavy rains will continue in Yemen throughout the current month of August 2022, threatening of further damage and displacement and exacerbating the already deteriorating living conditions due to the war and conflict that the country witnessing since 2015.

According to the statistics and estimation of international organizations, the residents of Al-Luhaya, like other inhabitants of the Hodeida provinces and districts, suffer from the deteriorating living conditions of the population, and chronic poverty exacerbated by the war to extreme levels.

In fact, the damage was not limited to this level in Al-Luhya district. The torrential rains that hit the various areas of the district on Tuesday, August 9, have damaged the road of (Al-Khubah - Jabal Al-Melh) which still the only road to the coastal city of Al-Khubah, as the city is completely besieged, and its residents are unable to get their basic needs such as foodstuffs and others to the city.

Located in the north of Al-Hodeidah Governorate, Al Luhaya is a natural port on the Red Sea, which was one of the key Yemeni seaports for the export of the Yemeni coffee in the past. Its population is estimated at more than 100,000 people who are distributed over approximately 135 regions. Additionally, the inhabitants depend on a number of economic activities that mainly include agriculture and fishing, in addition to livestock raising, trade and handicrafts trading.

According to the statistics and estimation of international organizations, the residents of Al-Luhaya, like other inhabitants of the Hodeida provinces and districts, suffer from the deteriorating living conditions of the population, and chronic poverty exacerbated by the war to extreme levels.

In the context, the residents of Al-Luhayah District are complaining about the damages caused by torrential rains and floods which hit the district during the past few years. Similarly, the current floods led to the exacerbation of their living conditions which depend on agriculture and fishing as a result of the torrential rains that swept away their agricultural lands. In addition to the damage caused to their work in fishing, which is one of the core sources of livelihood for a large proportion of the population of the district.

It is worth noting that, the expectations of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "FAO", in a recent statement issued by it, reviewed by "Khuyut", indicated that the population of low-lying areas in Yemen were particularly affected by the floods resulting from the heavy rains that fell on various Yemeni regions since the beginning of last July, 2022.
